Secular music #1

… this idea made me laugh when I thought about it.  I’ve read so many Christian blogs about ‘Christian-friendly’ music so I thought I’d write a list of my favourite songs that question God and religion. I’m apparently not the first to do this (surprise surprise) but hopefully there are a few songs in here that aren’t on all of the other lists (although I do love ‘Imagine’ by Lennon and ‘Dear God’ by XTC I decided not to add them as they are on EVERY other list out there!). Also, this isn’t in ‘order’.  The order is random, as are my music tastes.

DEPECHE MODE – Blasphemous Rumours

Yeah yeah yeah this is on virtually every other list out there but this was the first song that I ever heard that questioned god. I was 11 when this came out and I didn’t really understand it properly for a couple of years.  I’d been sucked into a crazy evangelical church and I was going through a hard time at school.  Some events happened, the church told me to burn my copy of this song, and I suddenly decided: ‘fuck you god’.  This song helped me through that.

“I don’t want to start
Any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s
Got a sick sense of humour
And when I die
I expect to find Him laughing”

MANIC STREET PREACHERS – Crucifix Kiss

You’d expect a band with ‘preachers’ in the name to have at least one song which is ‘atheist-friendly’.  Crucifix Kiss is one of my favourite MSP songs anyway, let alone the fact that it criticises organised religion.

“Christen me fuhrer Nazarene
Believe in tomorrow but not today
Give me all your possessions

Make poverty your perfect home
Allow your leaders to control you
Questions are now blasphemy

Why walk when you can crawl
Stay on your knees and kiss my feet”

NEW MODEL ARMY – Christian Militia

I doubt anyone would be surprised that New Model Army have an anti-organised religion song.  I chose Christian Militia because I was listening to it the other day and it sparked this blog.

“There’s a nightmare coming
Shut up your doors close your mind
There’s a nightmare coming
Born again, born again blind”

VOLTAIRE – God Thinks

I cannot explain how much I love Voltaire – his lyrics always make me laugh.

“God thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth
God thinks there was something very wrong with Copernicus
God thinks abortion is murder and
God thinks everything that science gave us is wrong
God thinks women deserve it
God thinks AIDS is a form of punishment
I hate people who blame the Devil for their own shortcomings and
I hate people who thank God when things go right

And I, I know what God thinks
God thinks you’re an idiot
God prefers a heretic”

BAD WOLF – Their Religion

Luckily my new ‘band crush’ have a song that questions organised religion too!  Their Religion is a thumping, driven tune that makes me smile whenever I hear it.

No Youtube link for this but you can listen to the song here: https://ukbadwolf.bandcamp.com/track/their-religion

“Too quick to contradict
Uncertainty is a plague for us all
But I can’t accept that laws we set in stone back then
Will prevent our downfall

Cos I see that’s all been a bluff
For we’ve never felt love from up above
We shouldn’t be scared by the things that they tell us
Cos they all live in sin

Faith, who are you trying to save
Too much time for hate”

NIN – Terrible Lie

There are so many NIN songs to choose from but to end this part of the blog I’m going to choose ‘Terrible Lie’.  A song that constantly questions god’s existence.  I remember listening to this a few years after I’d left the church and it helped me cope with those moments when you do want to believe but your sane, logical side tells you that a god cannot exist.

“you made me throw it all away.
my morals left to decay.
how many you betray.
you’ve taken everything.

terrible lie.
my head is filled with disease.
my skin is begging you please.
i’m on my hands and knees.
i want so much to believe.”

I’ve got more to post but does anyone have any others to add?

Here’s the playlist on Spotify that I’ve started … I’ll update it with every post then make it collaborative 🙂
