Tim Minchin

Secular/ Atheist Friendly Music #2

So here it is part two.

FIRST AID KIT – Hard Believer

I went to see them earlier this week and they were amazing.  Still don’t understand what happened to people not dancing at gigs any more but there you go.  Anyway they didn’t play Hard Believer (although they did play covers of America and Love Interruption which made me a bit over-excited) but I forgive them.

Well I see you’ve got your bible your delusion imagery
Well I don’t need your eternity or your meaning to feel free
I just live because I love to and that’s enough you see
So don’t come preach about morality that’s just human sense to me

Love is tough, time is rough
Love is tough, time is rough on me
On me, on me

And it’s one life and it’s this life and it’s beautiful

TIM MINCHIN – Storm

This isn’t the obvious Tim Minchin song to put in an atheist/ secular playlist, after all there are so many to choose from, but the line: And it’s one life and it’s this life and it’s beautiful of Hard Believer leads me to post Storm.

A 10 minute + beat poem in which Tim argues with a hippy named Storm he comes out with this line which I LOVE and quote almost too often:

Isn’t this enough?

Just this world?

Just this beautiful, complex
Wonderfully unfathomable, NATURAL world?
How does it so fail to hold our attention
That we have to diminish it with the invention
Of cheap, man-made Myths and Monsters?

PATTI SMITH – Gloria

Ok – it’s just the opening part really – but it’s a classic – do I need to say anything else?

Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine
Meltin’ in a pot of thieves
Wild card up my sleeve
Thick heart of stone
My sins my own
They belong to me, me

GERSHWIN – Ain’t Necessarily So

It ain’t necessarily so
It ain’t necessarily so
The t’ings dat yo’ li’ble
To read in de Bible,
It ain’t necessarily so.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE – Killing In The Name

Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses

My song of choice for stomping home …

Unfortunately ‘Storm’ isn’t on Spotify … but there will be a couple of other Tim Minchin tracks in this list!
I’ve also made the playlist collaborative if anyone’s interested in posting their suggestions?

Concentrate on the happy and loving boobs

It’s safe to say that the only thing keeping me up lately is work and stress.  Happily they are both subsiding and I am able, once again, to indulge myself in that which makes me happy and/or frustrated.

Today I will concentrate on the happy.  This morning I was awoken by an ear worm at 3am.

ear worm: A song that sticks in your mind, and will not leave no matter how much you try.

The best way to get rid of an earworm is to replace it with another. Be prepared to become a jukebox. (Urban Dictionary)

The ear worm was by one Tim Minchin and it goes like this: “Fuck I love boobs though”.  That was it, just that one line, over and over and over and over again.  I admit, boobs are great, I have two great ones of my own, but I don’t need to keep hearing a song being sung about them.  So here is ‘Confessions’ for you to enjoy and hopefully you won’t be woken up at 3am singing “Fuck I love boobs though” going through your head:
